Available now, this Made by Howe circular steel chandelier is inspired by the wonderfully whimsical post WWII designs (intended to be uplifting) of Jean Royère (1902-1981), who set up his ‘couture furniture’ business in Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honore, Paris, in 1947. Self taught, Royère said all he was trying to do was create a “harmonious spectacle to enchant the eye, rejoice the heart and elevate the spirit.”
Classically educated at Cambridge yet profoundly modest and always more interested in interior design, Royère quit banking and travelled widely in Italy, Scandinavia, South America and the Middle East, leading to the discovery of his contemporaries Gio Ponti and Josef Frank with whom he engaged in mutual creative feedback. The 2016 exhibition at London’s Fashion & Textile Museum of Josef Frank demonstrated the bright and fanciful textiles designed to counteract the post-war depression.
Clearly influenced by Le Corbusier, Royère remained happily between modernism and traditionalism. Fashion wise he followed Prouvé and Perriand but predated Eero Saarinen.
