HOWE LONDON | Tubular Steel Chandelier

CEILING | TABLE | WALL | FLOOR

A tubular steel chandelier ‘Made by HOWE’ following the original 1934 design by Jean Royère, Paris.

Jean Royère (1902-1981) set up his ‘couture furniture’ business in Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honore, Paris, in 1947. Self taught, Royère summed up his creative mission as trying to create a ‘harmonious spectacle to enchant the eye, rejoice the heart and elevate the spirit’.

Classically educated at Cambridge yet profoundly modest and always more interested in interior design, Royère quit banking and travelled widely in Italy, Scandinavia, South America and the Middle East, leading to the discovery of his contemporaries Gio Ponti and Josef Frank with whom he engaged in mutual creative feedback. The 2016 exhibition at London’s Fashion & Textile Museum of Josef Frank demonstrated the bright and fanciful textiles designed to counteract the post-war depression.

Clearly influenced by Le Corbusier, Royère remained happily between modernism and traditionalism. Fashion wise he followed Prouvé and Perriand but predated Eero Saarinen.

Can be made to your desired width and painted in a range of colours. Vertical drop can be customised to suit your ceiling height.

Craftsmanship and quality are absolutely central to everything we do at Howe London and we are passionate about promoting and preserving traditional skills.
